A quirt

An essential piece of equipment for the hackamore rider, the quirt or “la cuarta” is often misunderstood today.

A quirt

Good Pacific Slope style quirts can be made of all rawhide or rawhide and roo.
Some also use latigo for contrast. The poppers can be personalized with carving and stamping for a dressier look.

Quirts are judiciously used as an extension of the hand or leg for encouragement, direction and snap discipline.
However, they are not for heavy-handed application by the ignorant.
