The California Classics’ heel knot is neatly made allowing for the critical lift and release action of the hackamore. There is a small space between the flexing bars as they come out of the heel knot in a V shape to fit the jaw better. This allows a little room for the mecate to lay.¬†

However, the slight flexion of the bars is not stiffened with a trendy and moisture/insect hiding “plug” or spacer.¬†Ernie Ladouceur and friend Bill Dorrance had experimented with the idea. Bill rejected it returning instead to the time-tested and proven California traditional style.

Often a plug requires the heel knot to be enlarged throwing off the balance of the bosal. That may require a fiador to help balance the cumbersome weight for the hackamore to be able to function properly.
